Olympia, WA – The Artesians returned Wednesday Night to USL League Two (USL2) play after a week break from the Northwest Division. United PDX from Portland, Oregon who sits middle of the pack came to town having beat Midlakes FC last week to get their first win of the year.
The first half was a physical battle with a lot long ball action that resulted in a stalemate. Jackson Ozburn (Santa Clara University) got the starting nod at keeper for the Artesian Men from head coach Jason Dunn. Ozburn was peppered most of the game and made several key saves and totaled 6 on the day.
The second half was a rowdy one with several yellow cards including a red card to United PDX. They would play a man down starting in the 55th minute.
FC Olympia would get on the board in the 83rd minute with a well played ball into the box from Andre Philibbosian (Seattle University) to Chad Sovde (University of Washington) who headed the ball just beyond the goalkeepers outstretched hands and the Artesians would go up 1-0.
“We wanted to be more physical, more determined in the second half and finish our chances” said Captain Chad Sovde regarding the second have adjustments. Sovde has been a part of a resurgent FC Olympia squad having scored three goals himself in a bye week exhibition against Crossfire Premier to win 3-2 last Friday June 7th.
Ozburn made several more key saves along with good organizational play in the defensive third and FC Olympia would hold onto their first victory of USL2 competition in 2024.
The USL men have a game next Wednesday against Capital FC at 7PM at South Sound Stadium. Tickets are at fcoly.com. USL W League returns to action this Friday June 14 as the #1 team on the west coast (Artesians) faces off against Salem, Oregon’s Capital FC. Kickoff is set for 7PM.
The USL W League women are on a hot streak outscoring opponents by 26 goals and are the #7 team in the United States.
